Kids Count On US “Day at the Capitol”

Childcare Providers, Parents, Kids, Small Biz Owners Unite to Demand Tax Dollars Go to Kids, not Corporate Cuts

Press Conference, events hosted by childcare providers and their ‘little ones’

WHAT:  As tax season concludes, childcare providers, parents, children, and small business owners have united to remind the legislature and public that Minnesotan’s tax dollars should to go to children and their futures – not into a few individuals’ pockets as corporate profit. Low-income, people of color and rural communities are disproportionately impacted by lack of funding and by policies and regulations that are preventing childcare centers from flourishing- this is harming kids and the people that love them.

Nearly 100 children from across the state will be present with their families and childcare providers to remind legislators about why funding for the smallest and youngest in our communities is critically important. The priority of this legislature and candidates looking to hold public office should be the people of this state. Ensuring that all Minnesotans have access to affordable and quality childcare is a key way to do that.

WHEN:  Tuesday, April 17th, 2018 (Tax Day)

Press Conference 10:30 am

WHERE: Minnesota State Capitol – Outside Governor Dayton’s Office

75 Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55155

WHO:

Master of Ceremonies: Marshall Spears, Director and owner 3Rs Early Childhood Learning, Brooklyn Park

Press Conference Speakers:

1: Nasro Abshir, Director and owner of Family First Choice Childcare, Minneapolis

2: Pastor Frank Johnson, Grace Lutheran Church starting a childcare center, Hallock

  1. Jason Rathe, Owner of Field Outdoor Spaces Landscaping, Minneapolis
  2. Sydney Beane, Dakota Mother of four Minneapolis

This event is organized and sponsored by Kids Count on Us, Main Street Alliance, and the Minnesota Minority Childcare Association (MMCA). Kids Count on Us is an initiative of ISAIAH and a coalition of childcare providers and parents dedicated to fighting for full funding of Minnesota’s future through early childhood education.

WHY:  Many of the bills at the legislature revolve around taxes and who will receive and benefit from them. There are far too many politicians inclined to put common good funding back into the big corporation’s pot of profit – making it inaccessible to the families in the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota that need it to fund Minnesota’s futures… Children.

MMCA event

A group of 76 Somali-American day care owners recently banded together to form The Minnesota Minority Childcare Association (MMCA), which is aimed at fighting misconceptions about their businesses, improving child care centers and educating owners about regulatory and compliance issues.
